Boxing News 24

Pod host Shawn Porter was going overboard praising Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis after his win last Saturday night, saying he’s a combination of Shakur Stevenson and Gervonta Davis. He says if you “mix” Tank and Shakur, you get Jaron Ennis. It sounds wacky, but that’s Porter’s view.

Porter was caught in the moment, overwhelmed by Ennis’s sixth-round stoppage win over WBA welterweight champion Eimantas Stanionis (15-1, 9 KOs) at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

Overblown Praise?

Based on that performance, Ennis, the former IBF 147-lb champion ‘Showtime’ Shawn said he’s like a combination of Shakur and Tank. He says Boots’ defensive skills are on par with WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevesnon, who is near unhittable, and his “explosive” power is like that of Tank Davis.

“If you want a fighter that is as defensively responsible as Shakur Stevenson, makes the right move every time defensively, that man [Jaron Ennis] right there,” said Shawn Porter on his YouTube channel, going overboard, glazing Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis.

Defensive Realities

Ennis gets hit way too much for him to be compared to Shakur. Porter’s ideas are totally unsound. Even against the Rocky Balboa-esque Eimantas Stanionis, Boots was getting hit hard in every round. He wasn’t hit a lot because Stanionis was so limited as a fighter, but the punches that Boots was hit with were the type that would knock out many fighters.

I mean, he was getting hit clean by Stanionis. If this guy had real talent, Ennis would have been knocked out.

“If you want a man that is as powerful as [135-pounder] Tank Davis, is as explosve and can end the fight at any point and any time,” said Shawn, continuing with his heavy praise of Boots.

“You have a mix of Shakur Stevenson and Tank Davis, two of the best fighters in the world and one man [Ennis] right there. That’s how good that kid is,” said Porter.

Ennis’s power is not explosive. He has to land a lot of shots to get knockouts. In contrast, Tank Davis has one-punch power and gets his opponents out with one shot. Boots will never be that kind of fighter.

Porter needs to put a sock in it and hold off on the glowing praise of Boots until he beats two or three of these killers:

– Vergil Ortiz Jr
– Terence Crawford
– Serhii Bohachuk
– Janibek Alimkhanuly
– Israil Madrimov
– Sebastian Fundora
– Charles Conwell
