Floyd Schofield predicts that WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson will “mentally” break down from the punishing shots he will hit him with this Saturday, February 22nd, in their fight on the DAZN PPV card in Riyadh. Schofield says Shakur is functioning at the developmental level of a “seven-year-old” child and the type of “ignorant” person he dislikes.
The oddsmakers and fans are overwhelmingly picking Shakur to win this fight against the inexperienced 22-year-old Schofield. However, Schofield is a big puncher and fearless. He’s going to attack Shakur, put hands on him, and force him to fight or run.
Can Shakur Withstand the Pressure
Schofield says he’s hoping Stevenson, a Newark, New Jersey native, doesn’t have a hand injury or some other unreported problem. He wants full credit for beating him. Shakur blamed his much-criticized performance against Edwin De Los Santos on being injured. Most fans who were wise to the fighter’s excuses didn’t buy that explanation from Shakur, but a few of his loyalists did.
With an upset of the unbeaten Stevenson, Schofield (18-0, 12 KOs) can steal the limelight from the headliner between undisputed light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbeiv and Dmitry Bivol.
“He’s going to get hit, and we’re going to see if he can take those hits,” said Floyd Schofield to Fight Hub TV about Shakur Stevenson. “For a certain amount of time. Then I’m going to go home with his belt,” said Floyd when asked if Shakur can take his shots. “I just feel like he’ll break down mentally.”
It would be interesting if Schofield could cause Shakur to break mentally because he’s dominated everyone he’s faced, more or less, except De Los Santos. He’s going to have to do a lot of chasing to “break” Shakur unless he can get him mad enough to where he loses his control and starts fighting like a mad man.
We saw some of that in Shakur’s loss to Cuba’s Robeisy Ramirez in the 2016 Olympic finals. That was the one where Shakur cried tearlessly after the fight.
“I feel like people haven’t actually hit him, and I have the ability to hit him. I want him to give me a fight. I don’t want Shakur with the hand problems. I want him to fight me back. It motivates me a lot because nobody is stopping me,” said Schofield when told that Shakur said that he’d knock him out.
“I’m not going anywhere, especially against a fighter like him. He might have to bring a sledgehammer in there. People are going to be mad if they bet on him getting a knockout. I could care less. Shawn Porter is 40-something years old and just got off the couch from doing interviews.
“So, I’m not worried about an old, retired Shawn Porter who doesn’t even be in the gym can do for you. You’re fighting me. You’re not fighting Shawn Porter,” said Schofield, reacting to being told that Shakur has reportedly been looking good sparring Porter.
