Boxing News 24

Coach Bernie Tha Boxer predicts Keyshawn Davis will go to “another galaxy” after he defeats WBO lightweight champion Denys Berinchyk on Friday night in their headliner at Madison Square Garden Theater in New York City.

Bernie believes Keyshawn (12-0, 8 KOs) will become a star from this fight, and he feels he won’t need a unification fight against Gervonta Davis. That’s the guy that he’s been talking about throughout the promotion of his fight against Berinchyk (19-0, 9 KOs), mentioning him more than the guy in front of him.

Maybe Keyshawn can go to the HD1 Galaxy, 13.5 billion light-years away, and find the perfect opponent to transform him into a true star. It’s not happening here with his limited time left at 135.

Chasing Paydays

Bernie says Keyshawn is already “top of the class” at 135 with his performances since turning pro four years ago. However, Bernie feels Keyshawn doesn’t need to prove he’s the best by fighting Andy Cruz because it doesn’t make business “sense.”

In other words, Keyshawn only wants money involved with his risks. Other than that, he’ll take non-risky fights, which he’s done his entire career. It just sounds like Keyshawn’s whole career is a hustle.

“Where Keyshawn goes after this is to another galaxy. It’s no hype. He’s passed all his tests with flying colors,” said coach Bernie Tha Boxer to Fighthype about his expectations for Keyshawn Davis if he’s victorious on Friday night against WBO lightweight champion Denys Berinchyk.

“Once we [Keyshawn] become a world champion, you can’t take that away. It’s etched in stone. Now we got to another galaxy. He has another feather in his cap to exalt him. One of the newest, youngest, exciting champions.

“Tank don’t have no class or no nothing about no history. I never heard Keyshawn say he wants to unify. I just know Keyshawn is a star, and he wants to be a champion. He’s putting on great performances. Keyshawn is a must-see. We don’t got to have no belt on the line.”

The Weight Cut Reaper

I don’t know if Bernie has been noticing how Keyshawn blows up after rehydrating and how death-like he looked today, making weight, but he’s not going to be able to stay at lightweight for much longer. Making the 135 weight limit looks like it’s killing Keyshawn, and he’s 25. He’s getting bigger and should be already at 140, at the very least, if not 147. When you’re rehydrating to the mid-150s, you shouldn’t be fighting at 135.

If Keyshawn wins on Saturday night against Berinchyk to capture the WBO lightweight belt, he won’t go to the next galaxy unless he’s talking about moving up to light welterweight [140]. Davis can indeed move up there, but even that weight class won’t be easy for him to make because he’s a true 147-pounder.

If Keyshawn chooses to stay at 135, he’s not going to get any of these three:

– Gervonta Davis
– Isaac ‘Pitbull Cruz
– Vasily Lomachenko

Those are the only three guys Keyshawn wants, and that’s because he can get a big payday fighting them, not because he cares about building a legacy. He won’t fight his friend Shakur Stevenson.

Paper Champ Path

Most likely, Keyshawn will make two or three title defenses, if he’s lucky, against no-name opposition before being forced to move up to 140 or 147 after he fails to make weight at lightweight. The WBO title won’t increase his popularity because he’s not fighting a popular guy to win it, and his defenses will be against unknowns, like the ones he’s been fighting his entire career.

“The fact that he’s the top of his class. You can’t be but the champion when you’re the best. Hopefully, he gets the chance to prove it down the line that he’s a great fighter,” Bernie said. “Why are they supporting Tank when he don’t do nothing like a champion?

Fans want to see Tank Davis because he’s exciting to watch, he scores knockouts, and his fights bring drama. He’s not being maneuvered like Keyshawn is, avoiding a guy that beat him four times, Andy Cruz, and being boring most of the time. The only fight in Keyshawn’s 12-fight career that was entertaining was his mismatch against Gustavo Lemos. That guy was slow, easy to hit, and coming off a loss to Richardson Hitchins.

“Keyshawn is a businessman. It’s a business, and if it makes sense, let’s fight, just like the other guy [Andy Cruz?]. They keep talking about the other guy. Why is [Olympic] gold chasing silver [Keyshawn], so to speak?” said Bernie.

The excuses given by Keyshawn and Bernie for why they’re not taking the fight with Andy Cruz aren’t believable to the fans because he’s fighting guys that are beneath him. Keyshawn’s recent opponents, Gustavo Lemos, Miguel Madueno, Jose Pedraza, and Nahir Albright, weren’t fighters that brought in “business.”Those weren’t big fights either, and none of those guys won Olympic gold medals like Andy Cruz. They also didn’t beat Keyshawn four times in the amateurs.

“His [Andy Cruz] whole identity is based on Keyshawn. Everybody that is talking about him and Keyshawn. He’s never beaten Keyshawn. He’s only won against Keyshawn. So everything he’s doing is off his coattails,” said Bernie.
