Promoter Eddie Hearn would like to make Shakur Stevenson vs. Gervonta Davis next. Hearn isn’t sure what’s happening now with Tank’s fight in August after his recent legal problems. He says if he can’t do the Tank, there are the Andy Cruz vs. Raymond Muratalla and Abdullah Mason vs. Sam Noakes winners that he can choose from for Shakur to fight next.
Hearn still needs to re-sign Stevenson, as his 2-fight contract with Matchroom expired with his fight last Saturday night against William Zepeda in Queens, New York.
What’s Hearn’s plan for Shakur?
“He’s had two fights. We’ll talk now [about an extension with Matchroom]. Hopefully, we can continue that relationship. We’d love to. You have to come up with the right deal for the fight. I believe we can do that,” said Eddie Hearn to iFL TV about wanting to re-sign Shakur Stevenson after his two-fight contract with Matchroom.
Hearn is counting on Turki Alalshikh being able to deliver Gervonta Davis to Shakur. That’s the only way that fight will happen. Tank Davis will want Turk-type money, and Hearn wouldn’t be able to afford him. The two fights that Shakur had with Matchroom were against these fighters:
– William Zepeda
– Josh Padley
Hearn didn’t get full value out of the two-fight deal with Shakur due to the fight with Floyd Schofield falling through last February. If a better fighter had been used as the replacement, you could say that Hearn’s two-fight deal with Shakur was beneficial for his Matchroom company.
How can Shakur unify lightweight?
“I think he has to unify the division. Actually, the division is evolving a little bit. Sam Noakes is fighting Abdullah Mason for the vacant [WBO lightweight] title. Andy Cruz is fighting Muratalla for the IBF title. There are going to be some opportunities that arise there. He’s going to be really difficult to beat,” said Hearn about Shakur.
Hearn may be going overboard with his praise of Stevenson. Last night’s fight between Stevenson and William Zepeda was one of the toughest of Stevenson’s career. Even when he was running, he struggled due to the pressure from Zepeda.
It’s easy to look at that fight and assume it’s going to be a lot more arduous for Shakur if he chooses to fight the top lights, Andy Cruz, Raymond Muratalla, or Abdullah Mason. Cruz’s power, speed, and technical ability would be a nightmare for Shakur.
“We don’t know what’s happening with the August fight now,” said Hearn when asked if he can see a fight between Shakur and Gervonta Davis happening. “But that, to me, is one of the biggest fights in boxing. It’s two generational great fighters.”
Tank Davis still has a rematch with Lamont Roach that is supposed to take place on August 16th. However, the fight hasn’t been officially announced, and people are questioning whether it will happen on that date. If it gets delayed, Shakur will have to look in another direction for his next fight. He can’t just wait on Davis.
