Sanchez Predicts
“I see Morrell controlling the first three or four rounds. I see David controlling the second third, and I see them banging it out in the last third,” said coach Abel Sanchez to Fight Hub TV, previewing the David Benavidez vs. David Morrell fight. “I see it being a draw or a one or two-point fight.
“They’re two very talented guys, but they don’t want to fight the winner of that other fight, because they don’t,” said Sanchez about his belief that the winner of Benavidez-Morrell won’t want to fight the winner of the Artur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry Bivol 2 rematch on February 22nd.
“Benavidez’s flashiness,” said Abel when asked who the judges will give it to if it goes 12 rounds. “Sometimes we look at a fight, and a guy is throwing a lot of punches, and they’re all very fast.
There will be a lot of unhappy Benavidez fans if Morrell comes out victorious in this fight. Many of these people have been brought into Benavidez as the next star based on how good he looked fighting at 168, and they didn’t consider that he was a light heavyweight all those years when he fought in that division.
Benavidez was a true 175-pounder who rehydrated to near 200 and overwhelmed smaller fighters at super middleweight with his size. He also was fighting less significant opposition all those years.
The best guy Benavidez fought during the first 11 years of his career was Caleb Plant, and he didn’t look good in that fight, losing four of the first six rounds. Thankfully, Benavidez didn’t use the hand injury excuse like he did with Oleksandr Gvozdyk.
“That looks very effective to us and to the judges. The other guy might be landing the harder punches and fewer punches, but the other guy, being flashy, gives the fight is being won when it may not be,” said Abel. “That’s why I think it’s a close fight, and a lot of the rounds are going to be very close. That’s why I say a one or two-point fight or even a draw, I wouldn’t be surprised.
“Absolutely, I think it’s a fight of the year candidate,” said Abel, reacting to being told that David Morrell vs. David Benavidez could be similar to the Artur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry Bivol clash. “I didn’t think the Beterbiev and Bivol fight had the flashiness that this one is going to have. This one is going to have a lot more big moments in it.
“I don’t think Benavidez has faced the quality of fighter that this guy may be one day. Morrell may be one day. He’s not shown us that yet, but he may be. I don’t think Benavidez has faced that kind of fighter,” said Sanchez.
