Edgar Berlanga reportedly heading toward signing with Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) in a deal that will change his career.

The Biggest Bag

The highly ranked super middleweight contender Berlanga (23-1, 18 KOs) is a promotional free agent and wants to sign with a company that will secure him “the biggest bag.” PBC appears to be the one that the Brooklyn, New York native will be going to.

According to @cesarseda, Berlanga, 27, will be signing a deal with PBC. The deal could be announced in the coming days. PBC has the top fighters that Edgar has been salivating over.

Berlanga’s Hitlist

Edgar revealed his hitlist for who he wants to fight next to get “the bag”:

  1. Jaime Munguia
  2. Jermall Charlo
  3. Caleb Plant
  4. Canelo Alvarez: *rematch

Berlanga believes that beating any of the top three fighters will put him in a position to get a rematch with Alvarez. That’s the golden fight that he prizes most of all because it’s the best paying. He seemed down on a fight against Caleb, saying “F*** Plant.”

Berlanga is coming off a first-round knockout win over Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz on March 15th in Orlando, Florida. He was annoyed that Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn put him on the undercard rather than in a headliner gig.

Edgar wanted Hearn to set up a fight against IBF super middleweight champion William Scull, as he felt that he would capture his title. Canelo would then have no other choice but to give him a rematch so that he could try and become undisputed again ahead of his September fight against Terence Crawford.

Hearn Left Behind

If Hearn had done Berlanga that favor of funding a fight against Scull, he’d still likely have left Matchroom when his contract ended. Hearn delivered Canelo for Berlanga and a career-high payday of $10 million, yet he still chose to leave rather than re-sign out of gratitude.

In joining up with PBC, Berlanga would be in a position to fight these fighters:

– Jermall Charlo
– Caleb Plant
– David Benavidez

Inactive former two-division world champion Jermall, 34, is an unusual choice for Berlanga to pursue. Charlo hasn’t fought in two years and is no longer viewed as a relevant fighter. What’s interesting is that Turki Alalshikh hasn’t scooped Berlanga up already. For Turki not to have signed him suggests that he didn’t fancy the idea.

When Edgar chose not to re-up with Matchroom for another hitch, he likely was counting on Turki offering him a treasure chamber worth of gold to fight for him on his Riyadh Season cards.
