After witnessing a disappointing main event, fight fans received an exciting announcement that on September 12, 2025, at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (63-2-2, 39 KOs) will defend his undisputed crown against Terence “Bud” Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs).
This highly anticipated matchup has been talked about for a significant amount of time, and now it’s finally official. The Canelo vs Crawford undisputed title bout will be the first event promoted by Dana White and Turki Alalshikh under the TKO Boxing banner.
Canelo Alvarez is a future Hall of Famer who has a resume filled with big fights. Now he’s matched up against another elite fighter who is also a future Hall of Famer, and this fighter has all the tools required to defeat Canelo.
A native of Omaha, Nebraska, Terence “Bud” Crawford became a first time world champion back in March 2014 when he defeated Ricky Burns via unanimous decision, and won the WBO lightweight title.
A year later, Crawford moved up to 140 and defeated Thomas Dulorme by way of sixth round TKO, and won the vacant WBO super-lightweight world title. Crawford would go on to become a unified champion, and then back in August 2017, he stopped Julius Indongo, to become undisputed.
After conquering the super-lightweight division, Terence Crawford moved up to welterweight, stopped Jeff Horn in the 9th round, and won the WBO world title. Crawford would go on to have six successful title defenses.
A mega-fight that was five years in the making finally took place in July 2023 when Terence Crawford faced the then WBA, WBC, IBF champion Errol Spence Jr. Crawford had a dominant performance as he stopped Spence in the 9th round.
With the victory, Crawford reached rarified air, as he and Oleksandr Usyk are the only two male boxers to become undisputed in two different weight classes in the four-belt era. Evander Holyfield is also a part of that exclusive group as he achieved it in the three-belt era.
Present day, Terence Crawford has the opportunity to separate himself from Usyk and Holyfield if he can defeat Canelo Alvarez, and go undisputed in an unprecedented third weight class. Crawford will have his chance to make that historic feat on September 12th.
Canelo Alvarez is an extremely talented fighter, but he is beatable, as indicated by the two losses on his record. As history has shown, you have to be a very special fighter to defeat Canelo, and Terence “Bud” Crawford is a boxer who fits the criteria.
Terence Crawford is a switch-hitter who is a very aggressive counter-puncher. Crawford has a high ring IQ, great lead hand control, footwork, punch placement, and punching power. Crawford has all the tools needed to defeat Canelo Alvarez, but there is one thing that makes some fight fans doubt Crawford.
As a welterweight, Crawford defeated Spence back in July 2023, moved up a weight class to defeat Israel Madrimov, and now he’s moving up two weight classes to face Canelo. Some of the doubters feel Crawford has the skills, but moving up two weight classes may be too much to overcome.
While Crawford may appear to be the same size as Canelo, on September 12th, he will be making his debut at 168, while Canelo has been competing in the super-middleweight division for nearly seven years.
There is no doubt in regards to Crawford having the skill set to win, but the question is can he hurt Canelo, and can he take Canelo’s punches as the fight goes into the later rounds?
After Canelo Alvarez defeated William Scull, Canelo and Crawford had their first official face-off. Back in 2023, Terence Crawford became the first boxer to go undisputed in two weight classes, and on September 12th, he will have the chance to become the first to go undisputed in a third division.
