Turki Alalshikh announced the Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford “big fight” tonight for September 12th, at the Las Vegas stadium. He’s calling it the “Fight of the Century,” which doesn’t reflect reality. It’s more like ‘Fight of the Month’ for September.

Crawford entered the ring after Canelo’s 12-round unanimous decision win over IBF super middleweight champion William Scull. The victory made Canelo (63-2-2, 39 KOs) a two-time undisputed champion. He needed that title as a selling point for the Crawford fight because he’s a former two-division undisputed champion, having done that at 140 and 147.

Surprisingly, Bud Crawford looked bigger than Canelo tonight. During the face-off, you could see that he was thicker and heavier looking than Alvarez, who looked in the 180s for his fight against Scull. Crawford has been eating well in the nine months he’s been out of the ring since his razor-close victory over Israil Madrimov in his debut at 154 on August 3rd last year.

“Now, we want to do the fight of the century. The fight in September between the two great fighters in our generation, Canelo Alvarez and Crawford,” said Turki Alalshikh, inside the ring after Alvarez’s win over IBF super middleweight champion William Scull. “It’ll be in the stadium in Las Vegas on the 12th of September.

Many casual boxing fans aren’t fans of Crawford. He’s popular with a segment of the hardcore boxing fans who enjoy watching fighters who practice the ‘hit-and-don’t-get-hit’ style. He doesn’t fight aggressively enough to be popular with mainstream fans.

Turki didn’t mention the PPV price for the “big fight” between Canelo and Crawford. There will be many unhappy boxing fans if the cost is $100, like with the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao fight. Given that tonight’s Canelo-Scull fight was for $60 on DAZN PPV, you’d have to think the Canelo-Crawford event will be priced higher.

It’s a good fight, but not near the level that Turki labels it. Crawford isn’t the fight that fans want to see. They want Canelo to fight David Benavidez, not the aging Crawford.
