Boxing News 24

Shakur Stevenson says he has one fight remaining on his contract with Matchroom, and he wants that fight to be against Gervonta Davis, William Zepeda, or Lamont Roach. It’s not looking good for the Eddie Hearn-promoted Stevenson (23-0, 11 KOs) to get any of those opponents in his final fight.

Tank and Roach are likely to fight a rematch next. Neither of them will take a match against Stevenson because there’s too much fan interest in seeing a second clash between them. WBC interim lightweight champion Zepeda (32-0, 27 KOs) has a rematch against Tevin Farmer on March 29th in Cancun, Mexico. It’s still too early to know if he and his promoters at Golden Boy will want to fight Shakur next.

Alternative Fights

– Andy Cruz
– Raymond Muratalla
– Abdullah Mason
– Edwin De Los Santos
– Joe Cordina

Shakur may have to take what Hearn can dig up for him, which might be another British fighter like Josh Padley, the guy he just fought. Hearn can produce those type of fighters easily for Shakur, but he would have to be willing to lower his expectations a little.

League Leap?

We know that Hearn has been pushing hard for WBA lightweight champion Tank Davis to fight Shakur, but that’s NOT happening unless Turki Alalshikh is interested in putting on that fight. I don’t think he will.

WBC lightweight champion Shakur isn’t saying whether he would be agreeable to fighting his ‘brother’ Keyshawn Davis or some of the talented contenders like Andy Cruz, Raymond Muratalla, Abdullah Mason or Edwin De Los Santos. The 2016 Olympic silver medalist Stevenson hasn’t mentioned wanting to fight any of those guys in his final fight of his contract because he’s looking for the big fish.

“If he’s staying at 147, that fight is never going to happen,” said Shakur Stevenson to Cigar Talk about a fight between him and Devin Haney never happening if Dev chooses to stay at 147.

Haney (31-0, 15 KO) isn’t ever expected to return to the 140 or 135-lb divisions at this stage of his career. He’s fighting on May 2nd against Jose Ramirez on Turki Alalshikh’s card, and then possibly against Ryan Garcia in a rematch in October. It’s unrealistic to assume that Haney would drop back down to lightweight to fight Shakur.

Dream Matches

“I don’t want to get into contract details either, but I’ve got one more fight [with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing], but it should be either [William] Zepeda or Tank. I’m hearing about Tank fighting somebody else, though,” said Shakur.

“If not, I might even switch it up and ask for Lamont [Roach]. I think that’s the fight,” Shakur continued. “I’m real cool with Lamont. We got a friendship. I’ve known Lamont for years and years. What he just did [against Gervonta Davis] was amazing to see. He put on a great performance, I would love to show that I’m levels above him, too.”

Shakur isn’t saying whether he’ll reup with Hearn for another short three-fight contract, but it doesn’t seem likely. He’s probably hoping that Turki will offer him big money to join his new league, which he could live to regret if he does.

If Dana White is serious about wanting fighters in this new boxing league to fight ‘The best,’ Shakur isn’t going to do well if it means facing someone good, especially if it involves fighting someone two divisions bigger than him.

Turki likes to make odd pairings between fighters from different weight classes, and he may get an idea of putting Shakur in with someone like welterweight Jaron Ennis, which would be a complete mismatch. Again, Shakur signing with Turki may be something he regrets if he starts losing around the clock.
